Spring 2017 River Report: South Fork Boise Logjam

Reported May 11th by Dale Keys

We headed up to run the South Fork Boise today at 8500 CFS.  A group that ran it yesterday sent us a photo of a log to look out for (LogMay10) that would be fairly easy to miss. We hiked out across the mesa above Neal Bridge to get a look at it on the way up and there was a new strainer (LogMay11) all the way across the river.

This is about a mile below Buffalo Creek. Needless to say we bagged the trip. This is a deadly strainer. You can't see it until it's too late, there's no way to miss it, and as you can see from the Youtube video there's no easy way out of the canyon once you hit it. There's a second log directly below it on the south side, and a huge hole below that.

If the river doesn't float this Ponderosa out, it will block the river indefinitely and get more dangerous as the water level drops.
